The Arts District in Los Angeles is an old industrial area that attracted art students and starving artists looking for low cost studio and apartment rent in converted factory buildings. The early studio apartments consisted of rough and gritty partitioning of factory floors and dark windowless warrens burrowed into basements and boiler rooms. In the last decade however gentrification has brought with it trendy loft spaces and boutique hotels. The rent has gone way up and the starving artists have been replaced by moderately successful to highly successful artists and trust fund hipsters but now you can walk the neighborhood streets at night and the wall murals are not defaced with graffiti. There is music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air. In the courtyard below and to the left an old abandoned fuel oil tank is being excavated. - Royalty free image Pete Babij (360Cities)
